Where To Find Thaniel BG3 Shadow Cursed Lands Quest Guide
Lifting the dark curse from the Shadow-Cursed Lands is one of the most critical storylines in Baldur's Gate 3. To succeed, players must locate Thaniel, the spirit of the land, whose absence keeps the region shrouded in darkness. Finding him requires following a specific series of quest steps centered around Last Light Inn and the House in Deep Shadows.
Starting the Quest at Last Light Inn
Your journey to find Thaniel begins at the Last Light Inn in Act 2. Inside, you will find a comatose man named Art Cullagh lying in a bed on the ground floor. Speaking with him or examining his belongings reveals clues that tie his condition directly to the spirit of the land.
To wake Art Cullagh, you need to venture to the House of Healing located in the Reithwin Town area. After defeating Malus Thorm, retrieve Art's battered lute from his body and return to the inn. Playing the lute near Art will wake him, allowing him to reveal crucial information about Thaniel's location to Halsin.
Defending Halsin's Portal at the Shore
Once Art Cullagh provides the location details, speak with Halsin to initiate the next major step. Halsin will lead you to the nearby lake shore where he opens a shadow portal into the Shadowfell to rescue Thaniel. You must defend this portal from waves of shadowy enemies for several combat turns.
Preparing your party with area-of-effect spells and radiant damage is essential for surviving this defense encounter. Keeping the portal intact ensures Halsin can return safely with Thaniel's spirit body. Once the battle ends, Halsin brings Thaniel back to your camp, though the spirit remains incomplete.
Reuniting Thaniel with His Shadow Half
Although Thaniel is rescued from the Shadowfell, he cannot heal the land until he is reunited with Oliver, his split half. Oliver is located in a ruined building known as the House in Deep Shadows, situated in the eastern region of the map. Interacting with Oliver triggers a game of hide-and-seek followed by a challenging encounter.
After defeating Oliver's shadowy guardians, convince him to return and merge back with Thaniel. With both halves reunited, the spirit's strength is fully restored. Defeating Ketheric Thorm later in Act 2 will finally trigger Thaniel's power to cleanse the Shadow-Cursed Lands completely.
